Australia's Child Care Subsidy, in plain English

The Child Care Subsidy, usually shortened to CCS, is the Australian Government payment that reduces the cost of approved child care for eligible families. It is not a cash payment to parents. It is paid directly to your approved child care service, which must pass it on as a reduction in your fees, so the bill you receive already shows the subsidy. You pay only the gap: the difference between the fee and the subsidy, plus anything charged above the government's hourly rate cap.

CCS in one paragraph

If you care for a child who is 13 or under and not at secondary school, you pay fees at an approved child care service, you meet the residency rules, and your child meets the immunisation requirements, you may qualify. How much you get depends on three things: your combined family income sets your subsidy percentage, the type of care sets an hourly rate cap, and your recognised participation sets how many subsidised hours you can use each fortnight. Since 5 January 2026 every eligible family gets at least 72 subsidised hours a fortnight per child under the 3 Day Guarantee, whether or not you work or study. You claim through myGov and Centrelink, your service reports your child's attendance, and at the end of the financial year Services Australia balances your subsidy against your actual income.

The 2026-27 figures at a glance

Item2026-27 figure
Maximum standard subsidy90% for combined family income up to $88,520
TaperFalls 1% for every $5,000 of income above $88,520
Subsidy reaches 0%Combined family income of $538,520 or more
Minimum subsidised hours72 hours per child per fortnight (3 Day Guarantee)
Maximum subsidised hours100 hours per child per fortnight with enough recognised participation, an exemption, or an eligible circumstance
Hourly rate cap, centre based day care$15.19 per hour below school age, $13.30 school age
Withholding5% of CCS withheld by default until balancing

The income thresholds and hourly caps above are the 2026-27 figures, indexed each July. Do not use older figures from pre-2026 articles: the 2025-26 thresholds were lower, and the old activity-test hours tables no longer apply since the 3 Day Guarantee began.

How big is the system?

In the June quarter of 2026, 989,100 families used approved child care under the subsidy system, with 1,393,620 children in care, according to the Department of Education's Child Care Subsidy data report for that quarter. Centre based day care was the largest care type, and 15,438 approved services operated during the quarter. About 34,000 families accessed Additional Child Care Subsidy, and 183,590 families accessed the higher rate for second and younger children. These numbers matter because they show CCS is a mainstream, mass program, not a niche payment: if your family's experience seems confusing, you are far from alone, and the official calculator and your Centrelink account are the places to check your own position.

How this site is organized

Start with what CCS is for the shape of the system and the care types it covers, then who qualifies for the eligibility tests. How much explains the income test and taper with worked examples, and hourly caps explains why two families with the same percentage can pay different gap fees. Hours of care covers the 3 Day Guarantee, how to claim walks through myGov and Centrelink, balancing explains withholding and debts, absences covers the 42 allowable days, and other support covers Additional Child Care Subsidy and payments that sit alongside CCS. Problems and FAQ collects the common traps and the review options.
