How to claim the Child Care Subsidy

Claiming CCS is an online process through myGov and Centrelink. You do not claim through your child care service, although your service must confirm your child's enrolment before payments can flow. The steps below are the standard path for a first claim; if you already receive CCS, you update your details rather than claiming again.

Step 1: set up myGov and Centrelink

Create a myGov account if you do not have one, and link Centrelink to it. You will need identity documents to prove who you are. If your partner is part of the claim, they will also need a myGov and Centrelink record, because the income test combines both partners' incomes and the hours test looks at both partners' participation.

Step 2: claim and estimate

In your Centrelink online account, start a Child Care Subsidy claim. You will be asked for your child's details, the service your child will attend, your combined family income estimate for the financial year, and your recognised participation if you want more than the guaranteed 72 hours. Your income estimate is important: it sets your percentage for the year, and if it is too low you will be overpaid and owe money at balancing. Estimate honestly, and update it whenever your circumstances change.

Step 3: enrolment and confirmation

Enrol your child with your approved service and agree on the sessions and fees. The service sends an enrolment notice to Services Australia, and you must confirm the enrolment details in your Centrelink account. Payments cannot start until the enrolment is confirmed. If the details do not match, for example the sessions or the fee, fix them with the service before confirming, because the confirmed enrolment is what the subsidy is calculated from.

Step 4: keep your details current

After the claim is approved, your ongoing duties are to keep your income estimate, activity details, and family circumstances up to date, and to confirm your actual family income after the financial year ends, usually by lodging a tax return. If you or your partner do not confirm income by the deadline, CCS can be cancelled and a debt raised. The balancing page explains this deadline in full.

How long does it take?

Processing times vary with the completeness of the claim and the time of year. Claims lodged with all documents, a confirmed enrolment, and a realistic income estimate move fastest. A claim held up by an unmatched enrolment or a missing immunisation record will wait until that item is fixed, so check those two items first if your claim seems stuck.
